KGS is proud to sponsor five Koniag Education Foundation (KEF) students to attend the annual American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference.
The AISES conference is a unique, three-day event focusing on educational, professional, and workforce development for Indigenous peoples of North America and the Pacific Islands in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies and careers. Attendees include Indigenous high school and college students, educators and professionals, including representatives from Tribal Nations, Tribal enterprises, and Indigenous-owned businesses. The conference also includes the LARGEST college and career fair in the U.S. for Indigenous students and professionals! Exhibitors at the College and Career fair represent a diverse range of corporations, educational institutions, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, Tribes, and Indigenous-owned businesses.

Past Recipients Highlights

2024’s five AISES students represented diverse academic paths and strong connections to Alutiiq communities.

Dahlia Berns from Old Harbor, Alaska, majored in financial accounting with a minor in business administration while training as an Ayurvedic health advisor. She also works as an artist and commercial fisherwoman.
Marsha Madriaga balances her role as a Payroll and Leaves Specialist with pursuing a master’s in Human Resources Strategic Management. A mother of two, she serves on the Koniag Seattle Shareholder committee and participates in her local APA pool league.
Michael Nelson is an MBA student at Harvard Business School and a US Army veteran who served as a Cyber Operations officer. He holds a BA in Physics and is connected to the Alutiiq Village of Afognak through his mother’s side.
James Stewman, born and raised in Anchorage, studies computer systems engineering with a math and electrical engineering minor. Of Sugpiaq, Filipino, Black, and White heritage with family from the Kodiak area, he enjoys video games and disc golf in his free time.
Tia Turvey from Anchorage is completing her senior year in architecture at Texas Tech University and will graduate with her bachelor’s degree in May.

We strive to provide a continuous learning environment that prepares our interns for advancement into increasingly challenging career roles.

KGS interns gain valuable hands-on experience working at a 2025 Top Workplace company, have opportunities for professional and personal growth, build a strong professional network by connecting with other interns and young professionals, and develop resume-worthy skills.

We seek highly motivated interns eager to expand their knowledge, gain organic experience, and contribute to the success of our companies and communities. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in communication, attention to detail, organization, and self-motivation. Remote, in-person, and hybrid positions are typically available.
